  • A Missed Entry

All experienced traders understand the importance of a proper entry. Opening a position at the right price is usually the difference between a large chop and a small loss. Just ask Dov Bar about his first three entries in GS today. All small rips because the entries weren’t that great (he might say different). When he got a great entry when GS popped close to 168 he caught almost a six point down move. Now that is a nice chop!

So today I strolled onto the trading floor, noticed MMR had gapped up over a buck, hit the bids taking my profits, and then grabbed some water for my ecocanteen (been reading some scary stuff about drinking out of plastic bottles). I rustled through some stocks to trade: CREE? IBM? WFC? MMR? RMBS? AET?

So ten minutes into my return I am marked down big on the illiquid FAST, my headset somehow survived the crash, and I took a deep breath. It was now on. I was back trading.

At around 3:00pm EST Dov Bar called out that SEED had just made a new high for the day. Dov Bar is our designated SEED watcher. You may have seen his recent blog post “SEED Money for the New Year”. I typed in SEED on my platform for a quick look to see what was going on.

  • I Should Have Made This Trade

On my flight down to St. John I continue my introspection of whether I should have made this trade. I read our readers helpful comments. Thank you. At 37,000 feet, cramped in coach that was not designed for those over 6′, with no Jet Blue Dish Network, or Virgin Broadband (that @HowardLindzon is always chirping about), it is just me, my thoughts and my travel computer. Soon I might add a double vodka with a splash of tonic. Hey I am on vacation. But if my writing starts to change that could be the reason.

The financial stocks are still capable of having sharp down moves intraday circa 2008 and early 2009. We saw this when Meredith Whitney lowered GS estimates intraday on Tuesday and we saw it again today when federal regulators reminded banks to protect against a future rise in interest rates.

  • Some Ideas on Light Holiday Trading

Ok so the volume is light.  GMan barked on the Open, “Volume is down 1/2.”  Dovey said about the same just with some streets of Brooklyn color.  On a day like today we must observe this different trading.  But there were still some opportunities.

With my post nasal drip cough I tucked myself into my trading station ready to perform.  AST who sits to my left was interested in RHT. I didn’t have a stock(s) I needed to trade, so I traded his.  RHT on the Open was a lesson in how not to lose money.

As a trader our quest is to make trading opportunities our own.  We are all different.  We process information uniquely, have a different tolerance for pain, trade specific set ups better than others, etc.  As intraday traders we must have Trades2Hold, longer term intraday trades in our quiver.  But it is up to find these best ones for us.  Today in RIMM the market offered a trading opportunity, Trade2Hold, for you.

If you needed yet another sign that the volatility is low, just look at today’s action after the Federal Reserve rate announcement. Yes, we knew that the rate was going to be steady. And yes we figured that the language in the announcement would be similar to previous ones (Fed plans to keep rates exceptionally low for extended period etc.)
